Girls Inc. of Albany, Ga., has received a mini-grant from the Governor’s Office for Children and Families (GOCF) that it will use to improve its teen pregnancy prevention program, Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy. Girls Inc. will use the award to purchase 10 RealCare Baby Infant Simulators, which help teens understand the responsibility of parenting. GOCF instituted the mini-grant as a new funding program for abstinence education to help reduce pregnancy, sexual activity, and STDs in adolescents. According to the Georgia Department of Public Health Online Analytical Statistical Information System, the 14-county area of the Southwest Public Health District reported 269 pregnancies among 15–17-year-olds in 2011. Girls Inc. also is willing to collaborate with schools and community organizations to present teen pregnancy prevention programs. Schools or organizations interested in the Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy program with the RealCare babies should contact Sherrell Alexander, executive director of Girls Inc. of Albany, at (229) 435–1897.
