This article was recently reported by CBS Dallas/Fort Worth. Irving Independent School District (ISD) and Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) held a meeting October 21 to provide TB education for parents, students, staff, and the community, following a McArthur High School student’s positive TB test result. ISD Spokesperson Lesley Weaver stated that the informational meeting aimed to help people understand TB and health officials’ plans for testing approximately 80 McArthur students and staff who could have had contact with the infected student. DCHHS will provide free TB testing. School officials also distributed at McArthur High on Monday a TB handout that explained TB transmission and available treatments for students and staff. Weaver emphasized that ISD and DCHHS did not believe the school had a TB epidemic or problem. Health officials stated that the student, believed to have acquired TB while out of state, was receiving TB treatment. A similar incident at ISD’s Nimitz High School last spring resulted in TB testing for 130 students and staff, which identified five additional TB cases among students. DCHHS officials did not believe the McArthur High School and Nimitz High School TB cases were connected.
