Three million people went undiagnosed and untreated for TB last year, even as the number of diagnosed cases fell, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Approximately 1.3 million TB deaths and 8.6 million diagnoses occurred worldwide in 2012. Antibiotics can treat most TB cases but WHO noted an increase in drug-resistant TB strains, which require more expensive and toxic medication to treat successfully. The agency estimates 16,000 TB-infected people worldwide are not receiving treatment.
