WASHINGTON: Public Health Workers Will Call Your Ex If You Have an STD

The Cut recently reported that public health officials in the Pacific Northwest were motivated to begin calling ex-partners of people who tested positive for gonorrhea after five counties experienced an outbreak of the STD. Government workers call former partners through an anonymous notification system to inform them of their potential exposure to the disease. When people diagnosed with the disease do not want to contact past partners, personnel like Anna Holloran, from the Spokane Regional Health District in Washington State, make the call. “Some people cry, some people get really angry, some people don't want to talk to me at all. A lot of people are really anxious to know who it was [who gave them the infection]. Of course, I can't say anything whatsoever that would identify that,” Holloran said.
