The New Vision reported that the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) will distribute almost 3 million male condoms and 200,000 female condoms throughout the country in response to an overall condom shortage and a rise in the incidence of STDs. Catherine Ntabadde, a spokesperson for URCS, said the aim is to reduce unwanted pregnancies and STD incidence, including HIV in youth. “The condom distribution is in line with [URCS] 2011–2015 strategic objective two of improving the health status of vulnerable and affected communities by reducing morbidity and mortality arising from common diseases,” Ntabadde said. URCS formed the program, Alternative Condom Distribution Mechanism, in January 2012 to target the most at-risk individuals, including sex workers, taxi/bus/truck drivers, disco and night clubs attendants, and roadside food vendors. URCS created several condom distribution centers, or condom banks, at health facilities to reduce the fear of buying condoms from health units and other outlets. According to Ntabadde, URCS plans to dispense condoms in 112 districts in Uganda.
