An article in The News International reported that Pakistan will observe Hepatitis C Awareness Day on November 28. The hope is that authorities and concerned citizens can bring together all sectors of society to prevent the spread of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection throughout the country. Participants will develop awareness activities to educate the public and encourage medical providers to inform the public about HCV transmission, which can severely affect the liver and cause death if left untreated. The organizers plan to use HCV prevention books, posters, brochures, animated videos, seminars, disease screening camps, plays, and other outreach activities to raise public awareness. Activists in Pakistan have been demanding an end to reuse of disposable syringes, mandatory screening of all donated blood, and safe and proper disposal of medical waste—particularly needles and sharp instruments—to stop transmission of this blood-borne disease.
