Islands Business recently reported that the hepatitis B virus affects many individuals in the island nation of Tuvalu. According to the government publication “Fenui,” a 2006 Tuvalu Health Department sexually transmitted infections survey of seafarers and pregnant women found that 13 percent of respondents were infected with hepatitis B. Annual records continue to demonstrate more individuals contracting the disease. Tuvalu’s Director of Health Dr. Stephen Homasi said at the recent World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Committee Meeting in Manila that WHO encourages countries to manage their hepatitis B vaccination programs effectively to prevent children from contracting the disease and already infected individuals from contracting liver cancer
