Kens5.com recently reported that San Antonio, Texas, has the state’s second highest rate of syphilis cases. To accommodate more testing, the San Antonio AIDS Foundation (SAAF) has increased hours to Tuesday evenings. SAAF provides free HIV testing with funds from a state program, but syphilis tests come directly from SAAF’s budget. SAAF representatives said more people are turning out for the evening hours. "We found that it was something that needed to happen. The community really needed to have another source besides Metro Health to get tested for syphilis. So, we just decided to do it ourselves," explained Alberto Barragan, SAAF HIV coordinator. SAAF also provides treatment strategies and counseling for patients. Clinic hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Extended Tuesday hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
