LocalPutnam.com reported recently that with hepatitis C infections on the rise, the Putnam County, N.Y., Department of Health is expanding its services with a rapid screening test for the virus that takes approximately 20 minutes. The department will refer individuals receiving a positive result for confirmatory testing and treatment. Commissioner of Health Allen Beals, MD, recommends that all residents born between 1945 and 1965 be tested once for hepatitis C, following the broad screening guidelines endorsed by the New York State Department of Health, CDC, and the US Preventive Services Task Force, since 75 percent of those infected are unaware of their status. For further information on scheduling an appointment, visit www.putnamcountyny.gov, or call (845) 808–1390, extension 43114.
