JOHANNESBURG, 7 July (PLUSNEWS) - The fight against HIV/AIDS in
South Africa is expected to be strengthened through new funding
from the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
According to a US embassy statement, South Africa has received
approximately US $30 million in additional assistance to complete
its $70 million allocation for 2004 under the AIDS relief plan.
PEPFAR represents America's unprecedented five year, $15 billion
commitment to fight HIV/AIDS globally.
In South Africa the plan supports the government's comprehensive
programme to provide anti-AIDS treatment for more than 53,000
people, as well as prevention, palliative care, and support to
orphans and vulnerable children.
