'Tattoos can spread HIV' - Experts

July 1, 2009
TATTOOING carries a risk of spreading HIV if the tools used are not sterilised, experts have warned. The warning was made by the AIDS Information Centre at the launch of its strategic plan of 2009-2014.

In Uganda, 44% of women and 34% of men say they have undergone traditional tattooing or cutting of the skin, the centre said in its strategic plan launched by local government minister Adolf Mwesige in Kampala.

A tattoo is a mark made by inserting ink into the layers of skin to change the pigment for decorative or other reasons.

The AIDS Information Centre has branches in 41 districts.
