JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- The Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GBC), a network of more than 170 international companies committed to fighting the AIDS pandemic released the following statement today on the death of Makgatho Mandela, the son of Nelson Mandela:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mandela family during this difficult time," said Trevor Neilson, Executive Director of the GBC. "The 172 companies that are members of our coalition hope that Makgatho Mandela's death will serve as a catalyst for more companies and government officials to take action against this terrible disease. We applaud the Mandela family for their courage in publicly stating that AIDS was the cause of Mr. Mandela's death. We can only stop AIDS if we speak openly about its terrible impact and work together to fight it in every way we know how."
