A verdict is expected today from a Libyan court trying six
Bulgarian medical personnel and a Palestinian doctor accused of
deliberately infecting hundreds of Libyan children with HIV, the
virus that can lead to Aids.
All the defendants - as well as nine Libyans facing similar
charges - have pleaded not guilty.
The prosecution alleges the children were deliberately treated
with blood products contaminated with HIV at a hospital in
Benghazi.
The indictment said the action was part of a conspiracy by
foreign intelligence to undermine Libya's security and its role
in the Arab world.
The case has stirred up deep passions in Bulgaria, and the
country's Foreign Minister, Solomon Passy, is in Tripoli to
discuss the trial and await the result.
