METRO NEWS BRIEFS: NEW JERSEY; Newark Receives Grant For AIDS Programs

January 14, 1999
City officials announced yesterday that they had received $14 million in Federal money to operate programs for AIDS patients in the Newark area. They account for 40 percent of the cases in the state.

The amount is nearly $2 million more than the city received last year. The increase resulted from supplemental grants awarded by the Department of Health and Human Services to communities judged to have made effective use of previous grants. The award reflected a turnaround for the city's AIDS programs after years in the early 1990's when political squabbling resulted in the city's having to return unspent money to the Federal Government.

Money is disbursed to 53 nonprofit groups in the area by a committee that includes AIDS patients, community organizations, government officials and some service providers.
