Every community has to recognize drug abuse as its problem, rather than
continuing to believe drug abusers are "outside" communities, says Gregg
Bordowitz, a gay HIV-positive man who is a drug addict and alcoholic.
Bordowitz says he was unable to negotiate safe sex until he stopped
drinking and abusing drugs. The two issues cannot be separated, he says.
Identifying people with AIDS as either fags or junkies further divides us
and aggravates the exclusion of disenfranchised groups from traditional
health care. In the case of addiction, the government has turned a
sickness into a crime. To fight AIDS, everyone affected by it must come
out as a coalition against repression and containment, Bordowitz says.
