Question:

I have been living with HIV/AIDS for 20+ years and have used many combinations of Anti-Retro med combinations. I now have elevated lipids/tryglicerides(1400+)cholesterol/abnormal HDL/LDL tests. I am trying to find a statin drug to improve Tryg/Chol/HDl/LDL that does not conflict with my current HIV med combination of Lamivudine/Viread/Atazanavir. Any suggestions?

The only lab result you provided me was your triglyceride level (1400 +). You don't mention your total cholesterol, LDL or HDL levels, so it's difficult to know what to tell you. I also assume that you've spoken to your doctor about this issue.

If only your triglycerides are high, and if dietary modification and exercise have failed, you might want to try either Gemfibrozil or Tricor, which have direct effects on triglycerides. Slow-release Niacin may also help. If your total cholesterol level is significantly above 240, and diet has had no effect, then Pravastatin and Rosuvastitin (Crestor) have the fewest interactions with protease inhibitors.
