The title and subtext of my lecture is taken from a brief history of the advances in science that resulted from visualization and quantification. I will describe changes that occur with effective antiretroviral therapy in viral and T-cell population dynamics in lymphatic tissues in the course of HIV-1 infection. These analyses underscore the importance and benefits of control of active viral replication, irrespective of eradication of infection.
