INTRODUCTION: The HIV prevalence rate was 5.0% in 2003 with people under the age of 25 years having the highest rate in Nigeria. Too few studies have however been carried out on youths particularly on males. This information is needed in order to design and implement timely and appropriate interventions.

METHODS: This cross-sectional survey was exploratory in design aimed at collecting information on the socio-demographic characteristics of the male adolescents and young adults who were undergraduates (UGs) and identify the factors associated with the first sexual intercourse (SI).

RESULTS: Data on the first SI were collected from 609 randomly selected UGs in Ibadan of whom 409 (67.2%) had ever had sex. Age at first SI ranged between 10-29 years with a mean of 18 ± 6.3 years. Majority (85.8%) of those who had ever had sex, had their first SI before university admission. Some (1.4%) reported having anal sex. Nearly half of the respondents (45.2%) claimed that the first SI was unplanned. Only 62 (15.2%) used a condom at first contact. Condom use was lowest when with casual contacts (9.4%).Following logistic regression analysis, students who had first SI between the ages of 10 and 14 years and those whose fathers were in the lower socio-economic status were less likely to have used a condom at sexual debut{OR 95% CL 0.24(0.06 – 0.997) p = 0.05} and {0.39 (0.15 – 0.97) p = 0.044 } respectively, while older students (>20 years) were more the likely to have used a condom at debut{1.3(1.1 – 1.8) p = 0.049}.

CONCLUSIONS: Family life education should be given before the age of 17 years and certainly before university education when most would have been sexually experienced. Adolescents and youths need to be given skills to resist unplanned SI as condoms are less likely to be used.
