Children infected peripartum, acquire HIV infection in a state of immunological immaturity. The way they respond to infections, which are more frequently primary than due to reactivation, may be different from adults. This overview will focus on describing the epidemiology, natural history and management of bacterial, viral and fungal infections in HIV infected children, highlighting in particular, the ways in which these differ from adults. The aetiology and management of lymphocytic interstitial pneumonitis (LIP); treatment and prophylaxis for PCP and CMV which often occur early in life and the approach to management of diseases of childhood will be discussed.
Approaches to therapy for, and prevention of bacterial infections in children, will also be reviewed, as will the interaction between infections, nutritional status and growth in HIV infected children.
