The past 24 months have seen a revolution in the management of HIV disease. The availability of potent new therapies and the means to measure the effect of these therapies have taken the management of HIV infection to a new plateau. However, success has brought new patient management problems. In addition, large numbers of patients with terminal HIV disease still face issues of palliative care. This presentation will focus upon those issues most frequently encountered in the management of patients with advanced HIV disease:
Drug Therapy - Impact on Longevity versus Quality of Life;
Symptom and Pain Management in the End Stage HIV Patient and;
Issues around Aid-in-Dying.
The goal of this presentation will be to identify common areas of concern and uncertainty in the clinical management of advanced HIV infected patients and to offer possible practical interventions.
