International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
The goal of the International AIDS vaccines Initiative (IAVI) is to accelerate the development and subsequent use of a safe, efficacious and affordable AIDS vaccine for the world, and particularly for those regions most affected by the epidemic; hence, IAVI's commitment to developing a vaccine in and for these regions of the world. The search for a preventive AIDS vaccine is not only an extremely complex scientific endeavour, but involves a myriad of social and political issues related to AIDS itself and to the conduction of clinical trials in resource-poor settings that make AIDS vaccine research particularly challenging.
Vaccine preparedness addresses many of these social and political issues with the objective of establishing clinical and social research capacity and preparing communities for preventive AIDS vaccine trials and subsequent access. Project staff and partners on the ground will work with researchers, policy makers, Community Advisory Boards, non-governmental organisations, community-based organisations, health professionals and other key stakeholders to identify and support specific activities in sufficient quantity and with high quality in order to prepare for AIDS vaccine trials which will include the delivery of comprehensive education on HIV and its prevention and referral services for care, treatment and support.
Altogether, vaccine preparedness activities will help to create a sustainable in-country commitment to vaccines and a sense of ownership, particularly in developing countries.
