Preliminary information, investigation of small clusters of AIDS patients in Africa, and analogies to other diseases like Hepatitis B have suggested that non-sexual transmission of HTLV-III of infection may occur in household settings. The Project SIDA, a collaborative international project studying AIDS in Zaire, has investigated this possible mode of transmission in Kinshasa. Sera were obtained from over 200 household contacts of 40 confirmed AIDS cases and from an approximately equal number of household contacts of non-ill persons of similar age, sex and socioeconomic status in Kinshasa. Information is also being collected on age, sex, family size, period of residence in the index household, and other risk factors. Results of ELISA tests for HTLV-III antibody and epidemiologic analysis will be used to assess and evaluate the likelihood that household contact plays a role in HTLV-III transmission in tropical Africa. Implications of study findings for management of AIDS patients and control of AIDS will be discussed.
