This analysis was undertaken to determine which, if any, variables determine the major disease manifestation for AIDS patients. CDC staff had conducted interviews with 87 homosexually active men with AIDS as part of previous epidemiologic investigations. The raw data from these interviews were aggregated and reanalyzed. Forty-seven patients had Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) but not Pnemocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP), 20 patients resided in New York State, 17 in California, and 27 in other states. Patients with PCP-only were found to be less sexually active, use fewer illicit drugs and inhalant sexual stimulants, have lower yearly incomes than patients with KS only and patients with both KS and PCP. Multivariate analysis suggests that using nitrite inhalants may be associated with the occurrence of KS in patients with AIDS.
