A series of donor groups from Denmark, Finland and Sweden were tested for serum antibodies to HTLV-III: including, normal donors, asymptomatic male homosexuals, male homosexuals who were symptomatic but lacking complete CDC criteria, with LAS, and with AIDS. Sera were tested by ELISA, the data were transformed to fit a normal distribution and sera Here indexed to the normal distribution. Positivity levels were determined by 'Western' blotting and by titrati0n. The data showed a progression of the serological parameters which correlated with the disease involvement of the groups. Titer values showed a better correlation with positivity than indexed ELISA values. By all criteria a small percentage (1.7%) sera from normal donors were: indistinguishable from the sera of a few of the asymptomatic homosexual males. In the latter cases both reversion to antibody negative status or progression to full seropositivity occurred.
