AIMS: We detected the presence of specific HTLVI antibodies in HIV1 positive subjects to evaluate (1) the percentage of double infection (2) if the subjects with double infection presented an evolutive pattern.

METHODS: The presence of specific HTLVI antibodies was tested by Elisa method in 240 HIV1 positive subjects (215 were intravenous drug abusers). The HTLVI seropositive samples were investigated by Western blot assay.

RESULTS: The presence of HTLVI Elisa reactivity was found in 17 of the 240 HIV1 positive sera (7.08%); this reactivity was not confirmed by Western blot in 2 subjects. 6/17 subjects were AIDS.

CONCLUSIONS: The data confirmed the presence in Italy of HTLVI specific antibodies in HIV1 positive subjects like suggested in other epidemiological studies. We need a follow up of HTLVI and HIV1 positive subjects to evaluate a possible higher evolutive pattern towards AIDS.
