A study was performed to ascertain the incidence of glove puncture at lower uterine segment Caesarian section. The increasing incidence of Hepatitis B and HIV infection in women makes this of increasing importance to surgeons. The following results were obtained: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. This trial shows the highest rate of glove puncture yet reported during a surgical procedure. We are currently undertaking a controlled trial of a new forceps designed to grip both uterine muscle and needle more effectively. The use of double gloving, blunt tipped needles, new gloves thickened at the fingers and the increasing use of staples for skin closure should also reduce this unacceptably high rate of puncture.
