Comprehensive Care is provided to 90% of hemophiliacs in California by 13 centers. For the year 1987, these centers reported on patient HIV antibody status, age of patient, level of clotting factor deficiency and hemophilia type. The number of AIDS cases in California for the purposes of this study, was that reported to the CDC to 12/31/1987. The increase by age groups in the HIV positivity rate and AIDS rate was statistically analyzed. HIV serological status was reported on a total of 1438 individuals with hemophilia A and B. Of these there were 860 individuals (59.8%) whose serological status was known: 537 known a-HIV positive patients (62.4%), 323 negative (37.6%) and 578 patients (40.2%) had not been tested. The attack rate of AIDS is defined as the number of cases of AIDS patients reported as compared with the number HIV positives. This rate for the group as a whole was 11.5% or 62 cases among 537 seropositives; 14.6% (54 in 527) for those patients over 21 years of age and 4.8% (8 in 167) for those under 21 years (p .001). Despite an equivalent distribution of the date of diagnosis of AIDS, there was a bimodal distribution in the rate of AIDS among the age groups with the 6-12 year old and greater than or equal to 21 year age group showing higher frequencies than those in the 13-20 age group.
