OBJECTIVE: Epidemiological study of HIV infection in 318 subjects with the only risk of heterosexual transmission.

METHODS: Computerized data of Internal Medicine and Dermatology Units of the Clinic were used for the analysis. Twenty two social and sanitary parameters of 318 patients (51 men and 267 women) were followed during two years.

RESULTS: The incidence of HIV infection was of 26 cases (8,17%), (21 cases of stage II, 2 cases of stage III and 3 cases of stage IV). In the study of concomitant disease, of HIV infected patients, oral candidiasis and seborrheic dermatitis were found statistically significant. Anal intercourse was the only risk habit found with statistically significant differences. Low use of condom in HIV infected (23,07%) and seronegative patients (20,54%) was also observed.

CONCLUSION: - The results are similar to others obtained in other big cities - Condom use must be a great task for health professionals, and more knowledge is needed in health care education to improve the use of preventive methods.
