OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the children's AIDS program carried out in an outpatient clinic located in the "Centro" district of Madrid city.
METHODS: 130 children ranging from the age of 15 days to 13 years were studied. Biological and psychosocial parameters were analiyed.
RESULTS: 108 children (83%) were seronegative and 22 (13%) had antibodies. All seropositive children had seropositive mothers. 33 per cent of the 12 children over the age of 15 months, are infected (7, 3, 4, and 4 years of age). All except one of them of 4 years (P2-A), are asymptomatic after 18 months of follow-up. Two children were not followed-up. Of those infants under 15 months, 20 per cent (2) became seronegative and 80 per cent (8) are still seropositive. No one of the 86 children living with seropositive adults, and sharing household goods (57% of these considered risk goods), were infected.
CONCLUSIONS: A diminution of the incidence of HIV infection in children over the age of 15 months, was observed. The lack of transmission in householders. To emphasize the importance of biologic and social factors in health state of these children. The low rate of abandonment of the program as it was carried out in an outpatient clinic in the community.
