OBJECTIVE: To report the first case of HIV1 and HIV2 infection diagnosed in a Cameroonian patient. Up till June 1988, 6 000 sera were screened for HIV2 antibodies and all were found negative.
METHODS: Systematic screening of patients referred to the University Teaching Hospital, using Elisa test (Behring HIV1 and Elavia2) and Western Blot (Dupont and Diagnostic Pasteur) for confirmation.
RESULTS: A 28 years old patient referred for prolong fever, weight loss and oral candidiasis was recently found HIV1 and HIV2 positive. Looking at the past medical history, the patient had frequented West Africa.
CONCLUSION: From this case study, we should start thinking about the presence of HIV2 in Cameroon, considering the frequent movement of people between neighbouring countries.
