OBJECTIVE: To determine the presence of HIV Ag and the absence of p24 for one full year in 22 patients that were positive asymptomatic and symptomatic.
METHODS: The study was done in 16 asymptomatic patients, 3 in phase I, 2 in - phase II, and 1 with ARC. A determination of ENV/CORE and detection of HIV Ag in serum was made to each and every one of them.
RESULTS: The ones on phase II showed absence of p24 and only one was positive for HIV Ag; the patient with ARC was negative for p24 and positive for HIV Ag and one of the asymptomatic patients showed absence of p24 and HIV Ag negative, the rest of the patients did not show presence of p24 non HIV Ag. From this group of patients 5 have died and only one with HIV Ag positive in serum manifested all phases of the illness while the other four were victims of fulminant neurological alterations.
CONCLUSION: According to these findings we can conclude that for the group of patients, the trend established turned out to be quite interesting since for those patients that go through all phases of the illness it is possible to detect HIV Ag -- and the loss of p24 at a certain stage while in those that presented neurological alterations the HIV Ag was never detected.
