OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of HBV and HDV markers in a group of patients infected with HIV.

METHODS: 96 patients (70 males-26 females between 15 and 53 years) were studied. 72 were IVDA, 17 homosexual, 6 partners of HIV(+) patients and 1 hemophilic. The HIV seropositivity was determined by EIA and WB and they were all studied with HBV and HDV markers by EIA. AntiHBc titers were screened and on the positive patients it was detected the presence of HBsAg, antiHBs, HBeAg, IgM antiHBc and IgG antiHDV.

RESULTS: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME Of the 74 patients in whom antiHBc was detected 4 had antiHDV (5%), 3 of these sera were (+) for HBsAg (14%), 1 with detectable IgM antiHBc(+) and antiHBe(+) and 2 with IgMantiHBc(-) and HBeAg (+). The fourth serum had only antiHBc alone (antiHBcIgM-); 2 of these patients were IVDA, 1 homosexual and 1 bisexual IVDA.

CONCLUSIONS: It's to be concluded that in the whole population studied 77% had positive HBV markers and in the 22% HBsAg was found. The high prevalence of antiHBc alone to be linked to parenteral addiction. The 5% of antiHDV that represents the 14% of the positive HBsAg sera, confirms the high rate of this virus in relationship to intravenous drug abusers in our country.
