OBJECTIVE: To develop a handbook to serve as a practical guide for caregivers/family members of children with HIV infection.

METHOD: Nurses representing ten HIV treatment centers and related programs in Los Angeles County collaborated with other health care providers in the writing of the handbook. Topics covered include: institution-specific hospital information; HIV/AIDS-infection-treatment; hospitalization of the child; medical procedures; infection control; home care issues; emotional aspects; and community resources. The nursing group met monthly to develop the handbook to provide consistent information on caring for the HIV infected child. Content was also reviewed by parents of HIV infected children.

RESULTS: The handbook is a consistent source of information that a caregiver/family member can use to manage the day-to-day care of an HIV infected child. The handbook can be adapted for a variety of geographic settings and diverse cultural populations.

CONCLUSION: Caregivers/family members of children with HIV infection are given complex information about their child's illness during a time when they are least able to understand it. They need access to information for ongoing reference during the course of their child's illness. The handbook consolidates information essential for caregivers/family members of children with HIV infection and presents it in a useful and understandable format.
