OBJECTIVE: To discuss the basis for the design of an AIDS educative package directed to Mexican urban high school adolescents.
METHODS: Material prepared by the Health Ministry up to 1988 and its acceptance among adolescents was analyzed. The most accepted images and contents were identified according to the sociocultural characteristics of the Latinamerican youth and his/her level of sexual education. Results obtained from student KAB surveys were used.
RESULTS: The package consists of 3 educational instruments which involve progressive advances, from a simple beginning and building up to a more complex and indepth meanings of the messages. It begins with a poster which shows pictures of adolescents- "comic" type drawings - and 4 key messages stressing the adoption of basic preventive measures and the search for more information; the second instrument is a pamphlet that reconsiders the graphic image of the poster and adds more extensive information (etiology, present conditions, transmission, myths and preventive measures). Finally, the third instrument is an audiovisual that will always be used as an educational support in interpersonal sessions or meetings led by a trained specialist. The sequence of the package is the following: setting the poster in strategic places inside the school, distributing the pamphlets to each of the students, and scheduling sessions or meetings with a maximum of 30 students interested in learning more on the subject. In addition to the educative instruments, the package includes pre and post evaluation instruments which are applied before the setting of the poster and at the end of the interpersonal sessions or meetings.
CONCLUSIONS: The characteristics of the package favour that target group's attention is attracted, since it meets the following requirements identified through KAB surveys and other studies of social market. Images are not associated to negative concepts such as death but to pleasant images appealing to young subjects. Contents presented are short key messages physically related to an image. Pictures represent the "average" adolescents and design is based in fashionable articles, colors, clothing, etc.
