OBJECTIVE: Through collaboration of local and international agencies, to produce a dramatic film on AIDS, set in Uganda, which would be used for training purposes in the "AIDS in the Private Sector" project.
METHODOLOGY: Based on research conducted in other African countries on the use of "Entertainment for Social Change", it was decided that the use of dramatic film to encourage and support behavior change would better capture attention, promote understanding of message, and enhance the probability of message retention rather than other media formats such as documentary film.
RESULTS: Working with the Federation of Uganda Employers, the AIDS Education and Control Project of the Experiment in International Living, Uganda Television and local drama experts and actors, AIDSCOM has assisted in producing a full-length dramatic film on AIDS set in the Ugandan workplace. Authors will describe the production process including concept formation, script development, pre-testing, casting and rehearsal process, film shooting, and pre-testing of the film copy used in production of the film.
CONCLUSION: Our experience indicates that major collaboration between local and international organizations can successfully complete a project of this nature. Informal focus group research indicates that this intervention has a high potential for enhancing behavior change. Once the film is publicly released in June, research needs to be conducted to measure this change.
