OBJECTIVE: 1. - Non traumatic school integration of HIV (+) children. 2. - Training of teachers dealing with HIV (+) children.

METHODS: Development of a Pediatric AIDS Committee. Periodical individual and joint meetings with all schools involved in the teaching of infected children. To assess the results after some time through interviewing teachers.

RESULTS: Since 1987 we have schooled 21 HIV (+) children aged 1 to 4, in public and private schools in levels ranging from kindergarten to 2nd year elementary. They have been in school for an average of 2.1 +/- 1 y. Thirty two teachers were interviewed with the following results: 100% found integration of HIV (+) children beneficial. They suggested that information about infection should be provided to the director and the involved teacher. Periodical meetings were very positively evaluated, and 90% of the teachers were free of fear and stress after a few days whereas the remaining 10% kept some fear all along the year.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: 1) Coordination of Pediatric AIDS Committee with schools is mandatory for adequate schooling of HIV (+) children. 2) Periodical meetings are considered very useful and supportive.
