OBJECTIVE: The AA. evaluate how children with HIV infection attend the State Schools, which means to take into account how parents on one side and children on the other manage the problem of separating and fitting in social environment.

METHODS: They have considered 30 children belonging to class P2 of CDC; 9 of them are under 3 years, 17 between 3 and 6, and 4 between 6 and 10. They are followed since 3 years by a multidisciplinary staff composed by paediatricians, chil neuropsychiatrists, psychologists and social workers in a Regional Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of Paediatric AIDS. They have evaluated the mother and child relationship (which is the basic model for further relationships) by means of periodical parents interviews, infant observations, mother and child observations and have collected informations about school attendance both from parents and from teachers.

RESULTS: None of the youngers attend or have attended creche, 13/17 attend the infant school, mainly only the last year, all 4/4 children over 6 attend primary school which in Italy is compulsory. All these mother and child couples appear to be tied by a symbiotic relationship; the way they cope with this and school attendance will be discussed by the AA. in detail.
