OBJECTIVES: To stimulate the development of attitudes and behaviour amongst adolescents in the Basque Country (16-20 years old) which will prevent the spread of VIH and discrimination against those infected.

METHODS: The programme was based on the voluntary participation of both state and private secondary schools, having been carried out during school hours. There was a training course of 3 hours for teachers as well as educational support material provided. In the evaluation of the programme, which was voluntary, a questionnaire was completed by the students, (before and one month after the programme), as well as one which was completed by the institutions involved.

RESULTS: Results of School Survey: 73% of the teachers considered that the objectives of the programme had been achieved. 23% informed the parents about the programme. 95% stated that it would be possible to continue the programme in the future. Results of Student Survey: 16% of the students claimed to maintain heterosexual relations involving penetration, and 2%, homosexual relations involving penetration. Having carried out the programme, the percentage of those who always used a condom rose from 38% to 51%. The willingness of those who did not maintain sexual relations rose from 77% to 83%. There as an increase in the number who felt sufficiently well informed on the subject from 47% to 87%, 95% considered the sessions held in school to have been useful.

CONCLUSIONS: Where no programme of sexual education exists in the school, the voluntary collaboration of the teaching staff is an especially valuable resource in carrying out an educational programme concerning AIDS. We consider that it is necessary to inform the parents of the existence and contents of the programme, above all because it is after erroneously assumed that there is a special risk of infection in the school environment.
