OBJECTIVE: The main goal of this research designated by WHO - Global Programme on Aids was to collect information concerning patterns of sexual behaviour and the factors associated with them, as sexual contact has been shown to be the most common mode of transmission of HIV.

METHOD: A representative sample of 1980 Athenians of both sexes aged 15-49 years old, were interviewed in the period March - October 1990. A two-stage clustered sampling design and a structured standardized questionnaire were used.

RESULTS: In this communication the sampling methodology, the data collection, the demographic characteristics of the respondents and particularly their sexual behaviour and knowledge about Aids are presented. Statistically significant differences by sex and age are discussed.
