OBJECTIVE: Spreading a sensibilisation brochure on AIDS amongst secondary school pupils in order to have it read and discussed by their families. METHODOLOGY: 1. Elaboration of a sensibilisation brochure on AIDS inspired on the language principles used in the marketing/publicity area: personalized messages, extensive illustration, "shocking" photos, big print, independent media ... 2. Spreading the brochure amongst 20,000 pupils of the first year of secondary school in Benin. These pupils were asked to read the brochure and to present it to their families. 3. Six weeks after handing over of the brochure, an evaluation of its impact on the pupils and their families took place.
RESULTS: Individual interviews with 230 parents showed a generally positive impact: each brochure permitted a sensibilisation of an average of 5 persons; in 98% of the cases the brochure was kept. Amongst the 160 parents (70%) who had access to the brochure, 90% expressed a vivid interest, 80% confirmed to have learned a lot about AIDS, 50% showed emotional reactions, most often fear. A large majority of the parents expressed their gratitude for such a sensibilisation campaign, and more specifically for talking to their children about condoms (average age in the first year of secondary school: 14 years). However, 26% of the parents are still not really convinced that AIDS already exists in Benin.
