OBJECTIVE: To find out the risk factors which determine the HIV infection, in order to prevent it.

METHODS: A cross-sectional study has been carried out throughout Spanish prisons, except in Catalonia region. All prisoners who agreed voluntarily to take part in The Program for the Intravenously Transmission Diseases in Prisons have been studied. We present the results of the 19946 people collected in the first 8 months of the Program, which began in 1989. 7.4% of the cases were lost because of methodological problems and another 10% more rejected the blood test, although not the socio-sanitary interview. A stepwise logistic regression was performed with BMDP program. We used 10 variables but only 6 were significant (p less than 0.05) in the estimation of the sick probability. Relative risks (RR) were calculated with confidence intervals of 95% (p less 0.05).

RESULTS: The 6 risk factors found were: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME.

CONCLUSIONS: 1. Tattoing is a risk factor in prison people. 2. Blood transfusion and homosexual relations aren't a risk factor in prison people. 3. The most important factor in Spanish prisoners is IVDU.
