OBJECTIVES: To identify the types of educational programs on AIDS that have been developed on Surgical Centers and to identify the nursing team's attitudes and feelings concerning the AIDS patient's caring.
METHODS: A questionnaire was elaborated and answered by the nursing teams of Surgical Centers of nine general hospitals of Ribeirao Preto - Brazil. The items investigated were: information in workplace; techniques and importance of information, professionals attitudes and feelings. The data were presented in tables and analysed quantitative and qualitatively.
RESULTS: 81 (77,14%) professionals of the 105 that composed our sample, mentioned they have already received some information about AIDS in their workplace. Conference was the strategy most used, followed by distribution of folders, courses and discussions. 58,09% people said the information were enough to their professional performance. The orientations were given by nurses or doctors; after professionals' requesting or intitutional convocation. Related to the professionals' attitudes and feelings they said they have to have precaution and caution; feel secure and calm; be watchful; act normally. As negative features: insecurity, worry, fear, apprehension, embarrassment were pointed out. As the main nursing actions the use of universal precautions was mentioned.
CONCLUSION: Although AIDS has been a theme largely divulgated, there are some health professionals that have never received any general or specific information in their workplace. The health institutions must promote continuing educative actions to offer security to the professionals and a good quality care to the patient.
