The Italian Government has identified an urgent need for training in HIV its health personnel, and particularly for those providing services to HIV-infected individuals. Funds have been authorized to support training for 8,750 nurses and doctors working in Italy's 21 regions.

OBJECTIVE: To reduce incidence of HIV infection and related syndromes through health education aimed at teaching certain groups to modify their "at risk" behaviour.

METHODS: To provide health workers of various level with updated information, essential stills and appropriate methodology required to became "trainers of trainers", thus helping to spread knowledge and awareness among colleagues and the targeted populations.

DISCUSSION: A working group of HIV training has been established at the National Health Institute to provide technical assistance to the regional programs and to implement the specialized training courses. Approximately thirty one-week courses will be offered at the national level to some 1500 health workers. The following are the target groups that have already been trained by the end of 1990; prison doctors, trainers of nurses on HIV infections, regional epidemiologists, surveillance nurses for HIV risk, blood bank doctors, health education specialists in schools, and military doctors, for a total number of 240 Regional trainers trained between July and December 1990. For the 1991, the list of categories to be trained includes: trainers of doctors, doctors involved in surgical activities, workers in drug centers, pediatricians, laboratory doctors, dentists, STD's clinics doctors, general practitioners, doctors in communicable disease hospital wards, and leaders of therapeutic community for drug addicts.
