OBJECTIVES: 1. To survey the knowledge of AIDS among employees of the Sao Paulo State Bank (Banespa) and their attitudes towards HIV-infected coworkers. 2.
METHODS: The survey was carried out by the filling out of a questionnaire by 1512 volunteers, during the annual cultural event of the company. Special interest is focused on the correlation between the knowledge employees have on AIDS and attitudes towards HIV-infected coworkers. 3.
RESULTS: The authors analysed 1512 questionnaires, answered by 548 females and 964 males over 18 years old. 94.2% of the employees informed having knowledge about AIDS, including means of transmission and prevention, but 95.1% wished to receive further information. 87.1% felt solidary with their infected coworkers. Fear of acquiring AIDS in the workplace was expressed by 26.6% and by 36.5% considering the use of common toilets. 25.9% of the employees expected the company to advise infected individuals to stop working.
DISCUSSION: The above mentioned data emphasize the need of continuous AIDS health education programmes. Knowledge of the means of transmission of HIV contrast with the fear of acquiring AIDS in the workplace.
