OBJECTIVE: To compare the press coverage of the VI International AIDS Conference by both the lay and medical press in the period during and after the conference, to analyze the coverage in terms of emphasis placed on medical and non-medical issues and to compare the coverage locally in San Francisco to the Canadian press.

METHODS: All three major San Francisco daily newspapers (SFDN) were scanned during the conference for all articles relating to AIDS and conference activities. In addition, a newswire clipping service did the same with all 27 major Canadian newspapers (CDN) and 15 Canadian medical publications (CMP) both industry and physician related. All articles, regardless of size or prominence were reviewed and classified according to content.

RESULTS: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME.

CONCLUSION: The SFDN carried 81% more articles than were accepted by CDN through wire services and emphasized articles of human and general interest. Articles specifically dealing with medical issues and AIDS therapeutics received both numerically and proportionally broader coverage in the CDN but protest activities were evenly represented.
