OBJECTIVE: To assess the following questions: are people well informed about aids? How do they sexually behave? Who uses condoms? Who has undergone a HIV test? Do "high risk" populations behave in a preventive way? MATERIAL AND METHODS: 5371 women and 5272 men, from 15 to 49 years, coming for a "check up" were inquired anonymously (115 questions).

RESULTS: 1) In the whole studied population: 55% men and women say to be well informed about aids. 18% men and 8% women say to have a risk of aids. 10% men and women have more than 4 partners. 24% men and 15% women use condoms in sexual relations. 11% men and 15% women have made a HIV test. 2) 10% people are afraid of aids: 6% men and 13% women among them stopped having any sexual relations. 3) 15% people have a risk of aids (pluriheterosexual or homosexual persons) 67% women go back to one partner without using condoms. 72% men don't change the number of partners but use condoms. 35% women and 33% men have undergone a HIV test.

CONCLUSIONS: Women choose monogamy and men condoms to protect themselves from HIV. In the French population studied, priority should be given to parents medical doctors and school for information and education about aids.
