OBJECTIVE: To develop a system which would permit laboratorians and other health workers to identify and correct AIDS-related laboratory testing problems.

METHODS: As part of its Model Performance Evaluation Program (MPEP), the Centers for Disease Control developed the Laboratory Performance Information Exchange System (LPIES). This toll-free, electronic communication system facilitates the rapid resolution of performance problems by providing electronic mail and conferences, quick return of evaluation results and reports, AIDS- and retroviral-related information (news, articles, statistics, training and meeting schedules, bibliographic citations, and product announcements), and permits electronic collection of laboratory demographic and testing data. The system can be accessed with most computer and communication software combinations by calling 1-800-522-6388 (or 919-549-9109 from outside the United States).

RESULTS: As of January 1991 LPIES was receiving almost 3,000 calls per month from over 1,500 different active users, with over 500 new users the previous month. Over 300 files can be read or downloaded, and more are being added. Each month over 1000 messages are sent and many conferences are conducted. New laboratories have been identified by the system and have been invited to enroll in the MPEP. Users have identified performance problems and have received suggestions for resolution from other users. MPEP participants and others have been able to receive testing results and performance reports electronically.

CONCLUSION: LPIES is a model electronic communications system that can be used to evaluate and improve laboratory performance by using the resources in the AIDS testing community.
