OBJECTIVE: Study on the prevalence of hyperactive behaviours in sero-positive children, infected by vertical transmission and its eventual correlations with the sero-positivity condition.

METHOD: 220 HIV+ children, aged from 0 to 9 years, belonging to different categories according to the CDC pediatric criteria, have been followed by: observation of behaviour and mother-child relation, Griffiths' Development Scale for the assessment of the G.Q. and interviews with parents. Among these 220 patients we have selected 172 patients who presented a normal head CT scan.

RESULTS: An hyperactive disturbance has been evidenced in the 34% of the sample. In particular it is characterized by motor instability, difficulty in accomplishing a duty, attention deficit and sleep disturbances (difficulty in getting asleep and frequent awakenings).

CONCLUSIONS: The data emerged evidence the high frequency of a behavioural disturbance and we can suggest the hypotesis that this can be considered expression of an affective disorder, in absence of neuropsychological disturbances. We also suggest that the condition of sero-positivity takes part in the complexity of stressing factors that can determine affective changes.
