OBJECTIVE: To identify the differences in Occupational Therapy Process results with soropositeve cocaine users patients, using concrete activity or verbal attendance.

METHODS: Patients conducted to Occupational Therapy Sector behavior analysis during 1988 June to 1990 December follow-up period. The follow-up consists of a initial interview, activity proposal and activity development. The patients are mainly males, from 14 to 45 years old (CDC II, III, IV).

RESULTS: The results show that 50% of the followed-up patients developed some activity (painting, drawing, modeling, games, etc) and bonds with the therapist than the others that developed no activity. The perception of the activities resulted in a better comprehension of the prevention, health/illness individual process, slow and gradual reduction in the use of IV cocaine and desirable behavior changes. In the group of patients that developed no activity, 17% have been followed-up clinically, 5.5% have Occupational Therapy follow-up, 5.5% were transfered and 22% have abandoned any treatment.

CONCLUSION: The results of the patients follow-up show that the development of concrete activities is preferable than the verbal attendance due to the better interaction between the patient and the therapist and desirable behavior changes, like cocaine consumption reduction. The conducts have been changed this current year; the activity is now introduced during the initial interview.
