OBJECTIVE: The aim of the research is to study the environment of the children born to HIV+ mothers, the different ways of the families to cope with and the various care possibilities (familial or institutional).

METHODS: The study, based on a transversal approach, will compare 2 groups of children: children living in their familial environment (G.1.) and children under care, abandoned (and adopted) or retired from families (raised in institutions and foster families, G.2.). Data are collected from administrative and medical records in hospitals and Child Welfare Authorities in Paris. Mothers' interviewes will allow to define which social support are necessary to protect the bonds child/mother.

RESULTS: On G.1. (n=200) and G.2. (n=45) are presented. One third of the families are from endemic countries, the others from France (50% are of North Africa's culture). Mothers of children under care are more afflicted by the virus (high proportion of drug abusers).

DISCUSSION: Most of children are from families at risk: HIV adds to others psycho-social handicaps. Teams ans social workers must imagine new form of parental hood in order to prevent sudden family separation and even institutional child abuse.
